AI for video

A few years ago, the hard part of covering a club tournament, a high school game or a youth hockey weekend was getting a camera pointed at it. That problem is largely solved. AI-driven cameras now run unattended in tens of thousands of gyms, rinks and fields, and live streams are becoming a default rather than a luxury.

The new bottleneck is what happens after the stream ends. Hours of footage go into an archive, and the five seconds people actually want to watch, share and remember stay buried inside it. That is where AI for video is moving next, and it is worth understanding what is real today, what is hype, and what to ask before you trust any of it with your brand.

## Two very different things get called AI video

When most people hear "AI video" in 2026, they picture generative models that invent footage from a text prompt. Those tools are impressive, and they are useful for things like promos and concept art. But for anyone who runs or produces live sports, the more important category is AI that **understands** video you already have.

Understanding models watch real footage and tell you what is in it. Google's documentation for its Gemini models, for example, describes the ability to describe, segment and extract information from video, answer questions about it, and point to specific timestamps where things happen ([Gemini API: Video understanding](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/video-understanding)). Point that capability at a game feed and you get the raw ingredients of a highlight: *what* happened, *when*, and *who* was involved.

The distinction matters. Generative AI makes new pictures. Understanding AI finds the real moments in yours. For sports, the real moment is the whole product.

## The pros already run on automated highlights

At the top of the market, automated highlight production is no longer an experiment. WSC Sports, which works with leagues and broadcasters around the world, reported that its clients produced 10.2 million highlights in 2024, roughly one every 3.1 seconds, and that vertical highlights alone grew 81% year over year to more than 4 million ([WSC Sports](https://wsc-sports.com/blog/industry-insights/wsc-sports-in-2024-fueling-fandom-through-more-than-10m-highlights/)).

The capability keeps moving up the value chain, from single clips to finished stories. In May 2026, Spiideo launched AI Highlights, built with the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center, which turns a single game into multiple ready-to-publish pieces such as a game recap, home and away team stories and an MVP story. The company described the shift as moving toward *"true storytelling at scale"* ([Sports Video Group](https://www.sportsvideo.org/2026/05/07/spiideo-launches-ai-highlights-for-automated-highlight-and-clip-creation/)).

Even the cloud providers have published reference architectures. AWS maintains an open-source framework called Media Replay Engine for building automated clipping and highlight pipelines for live and on-demand video ([AWS Media Replay Engine on GitHub](https://github.com/awslabs/aws-media-replay-engine)). When the building blocks are open source, the question stops being "is this possible?" and becomes "who makes it easy?"

From live stream to posted clip

1Live stream  →  2Detect the moment  →  3Clip  →  4Title and tag  →  5Publish

## Capture is solved at the grassroots level too

The same shift has reached community sports. Pixellot, one of the largest automated-production companies, said in January 2026 that it has more than 30,000 camera installations and is on pace to stream 1.5 million games across 14 sports this year, with high schools, clubs and youth facility operators as its core customers. Its CEO, Doron Gerstel, described the cameras themselves as *"very much a means to an end"* ([Youth Sports Business Report](https://youthsportsbusinessreport.com/pixellot-raises-35m-to-scale-ai-powered-game-capture-across-youth-and-high-school-sports/)).

That line says it all. The camera gets you footage. The value is what you do with it: the clip a parent shares, the recap a club posts while families are still in the parking lot, the searchable archive a coach or recruiter can actually use.

## Why speed is the whole game

Fans do not wait for the recap show anymore. Stats Perform's 2026 fan engagement research found that more than half of surveyed sports media executives see short-form video as the key to reaching fans, while longer formats do more of the work of driving revenue ([Stats Perform](https://www.statsperform.com/insights/five-things-we-learned-about-fan-engagement-and-monetisation/)). Audience research firm GWI reports that US soccer fans are 75% more likely than average to watch sports highlights on social media ([GWI](https://www.gwi.com/connecting-the-dots/short-form-video-and-sports)).

The practical takeaway: short clips are how new people discover your event, and full streams are where the committed audience spends time. A clip that lands while the energy is still in the building does both jobs. It reaches people on their phones, and it points them back to the live stream, the next event or the registration page. A clip that lands two days later mostly does neither.

## Trust is about to become a feature

As generated video gets more convincing, provenance matters more for anyone publishing real footage. The industry's answer is an open standard from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), often surfaced to viewers as "Content Credentials": signed information that travels with a file and records where it came from and how it was changed ([Content Credentials](https://contentcredentials.org/)).

Version 2.3 of the specification extended that to live and broadcast streams, allowing segments to be signed in real time without changes to existing streaming infrastructure ([Advanced Television](https://www.advanced-television.com/2026/04/14/irdeto-joins-c2pa/); [C2PA specifications](https://spec.c2pa.org/specifications/)). You do not need to implement any of this yourself. But it is a good sign of where expectations are heading: fans, sponsors and platforms will increasingly want to know that a highlight is the real moment, from the real event, published by the real rights holder.

## Five questions to ask before you trust AI with your video

Whether you run events, produce streams, manage a club's social channels or oversee a league, these questions cut through most of the marketing:

1**How fast is "fast"?** Ask for the time from the moment happening to a publishable clip, not just "real time." Minutes matter.

2**Does it work with the video I already have?** The best tools sit on top of your existing cameras and streams instead of asking you to rip and replace.

3**Does it understand my sport?** A goal, a dunk, a wave ride and a clean trick look nothing alike. Generic detection tends to miss what your audience actually cares about.

4**Is the output finished?** A raw cut is not content. Look for titles, tags, captions and the right aspect ratios for each channel, ready to go.

5**Can people find it later?** Searchable, well-labeled clips keep paying off long after the event: for athletes, families, sponsors and your own marketing.

## Where Slipstream fits

We built Slipstream for exactly this gap. It takes the live video sports organizations already produce and turns it into timely, finished, searchable and publishable content, with highlights delivered in under a minute. No new cameras, no editing bay, no waiting for Monday.

The camera problem has been solved. The content problem is the opportunity in front of every event, club and league right now. If you want to see what that looks like with your own footage, book a time with us.
